Day-tripping
out of Las Vegas
by Chris Oliver, Advertiser Staff Writer
Not
all of the action in Las Vegas is inside the casinos. Outside of Sin
City, southern Nevada offers attractions found nowhere else. Within
a short drive of the Strip, you can visit Badwater, the lowest point
in the western hemisphere, join an overnight cattle drive, see on of
the biggest dams in the world, visit a ghost town, ride a bicycle around
one of the most beautiful lakes in the country or take a scenic flight
over the Grand Canyon So, if it's not your lucky day, ditch the dice
and consider these options they may be easier on our wallet, too.
Sandy
Valley Ranch
At the Sandy Valley Ranch in southern Nevada, the sign reads "45
minutes and 100 years from Las Vegas." It might well read: "
All who enter, abandon your chips here."...
Hoover
Dam
Forty miles east of Las Vegas, immeense Hoover Dam sits in stark contrast
with the neon-driven fantasy hotels on the Strip. ...
Death
Valley

effect, go during summer when day temperatures rise to more than 120
degrees, crackling the baked valley floor at Badwater, the lowest point
in the western hemisphere at 286 feet below sea level.
Grand
Canyon by air
The Grand Canyon Tour Co. offers a range of sightseeing flights
daily in small, air-conditioned planes over the Grand Canyon, leaving
from Las Vegas airport. The basic tour is an 80-minute flight deep into
the canyon, providing an extended look at the canyon's broad expanse
of colorful buttes. The flight also includes aerial views of Lake Mead,
Hoover Dam and the Colorado River. ...
Red
Rock Canyon
Fifteen miles from downtown Las Vegas, Red Rock Canyon is an easy drive.
Steep-walled canyons, sandstone hills and thick stands of Joshua trees
have made Red Rock Canyon a favorite place to hike and get away from
the neon landscape. ...
