Most
of the National Parks offer a Junior Ranger Program for children ages 4 through
14. This is a wonderful opportunity for your children to LEARN about the environment,
flora, fauna and history of the park you are visiting. Looking at the sights and
exhibits will mean much more when there is a motivation for your child to
achieve.
At the visitor center or park office
be sure to ask for the Junior Ranger book. You will receive a booklet that has the
qualifications for the program and the activities to complete for each age
group. Be sure to read all the requirements before starting to insure you will
be able to complete the program. Many parks require you to attend a ranger lead
walk, discussion or presentation, therefore check out the schedule of these
events to plan accordingly.
After
completing the requirements during your visit take your booklet to one
of the places indicated in the book. Once the ranger has checked the
activities for complete and accurate answers, there will be a ceremony.
The Junior Ranger pledge will be read then your child will be awarded
a certificate and badge. (You can, also, purchase the patches for $1.50.
This helps off-set the cost of the program.) Your child will have a
life long memory along with a wonderful souvenir.
