Bryce Canyon

The Pauite people have been in Bryce Canyon well before the arrival of the white settlers in 1870. Although the Pauite people did not live at the canyon due to the cold winters, it was a place were they hunted and gathered seeds and berries. With their presence in the region they have had an influence on some names in the area.

  • Paunsacugunt means "home of the beaver" (The high plateau in Bryce Canyon is called Paunsacugunt Plateau.)

  • Panguitch means " means water or fish (There is a small town in the area with this name.)

  • Yovimpa means point of pines (The last point in the park is called Yovimpa Point.)

Their reason for how Bryce Canyon was formed comes from a well known legend they have shared with us. The Legend people, when-an-ung-wa, had a god named Coyote. They greatly angered Coyote so he turned them into rock. The beautiful rock colors come from the red, pink, yellow and purple body paint worn by the Legend people.
